February 28-March 2, 2013
University of Illinois - Springfield, Springfield, Illinois

Call for Papers

The planning committee for the 2013 Illinois History Symposium has issued a call for papers on the interdisciplinary theme
"Slavery and Emancipation: Global Perspectives," which will focus on the history of slavery, indentured servitude, and the international reaction to the Emancipation Proclamation in the United States. New research and contemporary perspectives on the end of the African slave trade and the emancipation of the Russian serfs are also welcome, as are papers examining slave trafficking in the modern world. Proposals are welcome from all academic disciplines.

Papers, panels, workshops, demonstrations, tours, and special events will be part of the 2013 Illinois History Symposium, part of Illinois's 150th anniversary commemoration of the Emancipation Proclamation. Professional scholars, academics, graduate students, and amateur historians are invited to submit a one-page proposal, along with a short vita, for consideration. The deadline for proposals is September 15, 2012. Proposals on all aspects of Illinois history will be considered, though preference will be given to those with specific ties to the symposium theme. All proposals will be reviewed by the 2013 Illinois History Symposium Committee; presenters will be notified of their acceptance by November 1.

Proposals may be submitted online or paper submissions may be sent to: 2013 Illinois History Symposium, Illinois State Historical Society, P. O. Box 1800, Springfield, IL 62705-1800.

The symposium will be held February 28-March 2, 2013, at the University of Illinois Springfield. It is being co-sponsored by the Illinois State Historical Society and the following colleges and departments of the University of Illinois Springfield: the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Public Affairs and Administration, the Department of History, and the Department of International Programs.
